St Joseph's Keep Cup

The Environment Team looked into our waste practices at St Joseph's and we identified a number of areas we would like to improve. One of these areas was our use of disposable coffee cups. We are very fortunate to have our coffee man, Justin, visit our school each Friday to serve up delicious coffee and hot chocolates. However the amount of disposable cups that are sold is a concern to us. Upon researching we found out some interesting facts:
  • 1 Million disposable coffee cups are served up each day in Australia.
  • Over a year, use of a KeepCup reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 92% compared to disposable cups.
  • 98 tonnes of resources are used to make one tonne of paper (which most disposable cups are made of).
  • Half of the plastic used in the world today is for single use disposable items.
We decided to look into re-useable alternatives and turned to the Melbourne owned and operated company KeepCup. We are selling our Keep Cups at below the RRP to support our message of sustainability and caring for the environment.

The Traditional KeepCup - RRP $17.50 - St Joseph's price - $11.00

This KeepCup and all its components are BPA free! The cup itself and the lid are made from polypropylene, the plug is a polyethylene polymer called TPU (they are attempting to source this in biodegradable form), and the thermal band is made from silicone.
